Pancakes, Pancakes, Pancakes: Sweet or Savory?
These simple pancakes are both easy to make and cook but also taste awesome, however in our house there is always a light hearted argument over whether pancakes should be sweet (which I think they are) or savory (which my wife thinks they should be).
Where I like jam, sugar and lemon juice or orange juice on mine then rolled up and munched, my wife likes to cut them all up and pour chicken gravy over them, I have tried them with gravy and they are tasty however I still believe that they should be a sweet and not a savory meal/lunch/snack.
Only 3 Ingredients are needed in the making of pancakes, to make what I did which was 8 large pancakes you will need:
- 5 small eggs (3 large or 4 Medium)
- 3 cups of self raising flour
- 3 cups of milk (1/2 a cup extra if your batter is too thick)
How To Make Pancakes
This is the easy bit, from making the batter to cooking the pancakes it takes around 30 mins to do 2 stacks of pancakes.
To start with get all the ingredients into a large bowl and whisk thoroughly until there are few to no lumps in the batter, you can use an electric whisk or you can use a hand whisk which is quite therapeutic.
Sorry that I forgot to take a photo of the mixed batter, you should however end up with a slight yellow/orange tinged thick liquid, you will want the pancake batter to be quite thick so when poured it slowly spreads out and will need a little teasing into the shape when in the pan, this will give you nice thick and fluffy pancakes and not thin almost crepe pancakes.
Next Using a cup or 1 cup measuring cup pour about 3/4 of a cup into a hot frying pan that has a little oil in it and start cooking it will take about 1-3 mins to cook each side and you want a light golden colour as shown in the next couple photos.
then It is down to repeating the process topping the oil up in the pan every time by adding just a small splash. However you need to cool the pan down after every 2-3 pancakes as they will burn if you do not, I usually run the pan under some cold water then wipe it off with a towel, you do need to be careful doing this as the pan will be hot and the water will spit a little when you do it but it is necessary in keeping your pancakes from burning.
Once done you get your stacks and they are ready to have your topping of choice on, below are a few ideas on what you can add, If you add anything I haven’t mentioned please comment below what you add or send me pictures of pancakes (at firstname.lastname@example.org) with what you add and I will do a follow up post on all the wonderful things people add to pancakes.
